Daily Parenting Tip

The problem:
Toddlers can cause trouble in many ways including making messes, refusing to eat, waking you up in the night when they know better, using apps on your cell phone without asking and worst of all getting upset because they don't get what they want.

A way to solve this problem is a reasonable punishment. You don't want to have a very harsh punishment or a very light punishment, but there is a simple punishment that usually works on toddlers.

The punishment:
Send the child to a room in the house (besides their room. the laundry room usually works) for a timeout. Start off by saying "[name] go to [room] for 5 minutes. if you whine about it I'm adding a minute." Go through with your with the words you had just said. If the child whines about it, be sure to add a minute to the time. A free stopwatch is located here. If you're using the link I just gave you, push the count down button and then simply type in the time. When the timer goes off, reset it and type in how many minutes you need to add for the whining.

After both timers go off, let the child out of the room and say "[name], what did you do wrong?". Wait until the child answers:

If answered correctly say: "good. you can go now, but be sure to not do it again."

If answered incorrectly say: "no, honey. try again."
